Before the advent of tourism San Pedro de Alcantara was a small farming community growing mainly sugar cane. Its economy now relies heavily on the holiday industry and it is a popular resort. San Pedro de Alcantara benefits from its proximity to Marbella which lies ten kilometres to the east. It is also a short drive to the beautiful Andalucian interior with its picturesque villages and the Sierra de Ronda. The Roman Baths, Las Boyedas, have been restored and are worth a visit. There are also sixth century ruins nearby and artefacts from here, including jewellery, vases and bones, are found in museums in Marbella and Malaga.

San Pedro de Alcantara has a wide and varied menu for its holiday makers; from cordon bleu restaurants to tapas bars and from fast grills to traditional fish restaurants.
