Playa De Las Americas Introduction

Playa de las Americas is on the south coast of Tenerife near the Reina Sofia airport. It is a purpose built resort and the largest on the island. It has spread out to include San Eugenio and Toviscas. A Playa de las Americas holiday offers year round sunshine, with a variety of sandy beaches and a vast range of water sports. Playa de las Americas, a purpose built resort, has many multi-storey hotels and apartments, providing good accommodation for the many British tourists who flock to its shores. The resort is built on the side of a hill so those with mobility problems need to choose their accommodation with care.

Playa de las Americas has six beaches of which three are natural black volcanic sand and the others are manmade using imported sand from the African desert. Although the beach shelves gently into the sea it must be remembered that this is the Atlantic Ocean and that there can be strong under currents. Water sports including jet skiing, wind surfing, banana boating, sailing and diving. Tenerife is one of the best places for deep sea fishing when huge blue marlin can be caught.

A mini train runs along the resort and there are also many free buses, including some to the nearby attractions.

Among the many attractions on the island is Siam Park, a recently opened themed water park with animals as well as water rides. The children’s jungle area is also very popular. Loro Park has many animals all living in enclosures that mimic their natural habitat. The penguins live, behind glass, on an Antarctic island in minus two degrees. There is also a breeding programme for endangered species including gorillas.

A cable car ride to the top of Mount Teide gives amazing views over the lunar landscape with the towns and ocean beyond.

The popularity of Playa de las Americas with young party goers is reflected in the vast number of extremely lively bars, discos and nightclubs. The Patch is an area which has many bars with live music.
