Cancun Introduction

The development of Cancun on the Yucatan Peninsula began thirty-five years ago and has blossomed into a wonderful holiday destination. Accommodation is first rate, its beaches white and sandy, its clear waters teem with marine life and the nightlife is exciting. There are so many leisure pursuits and sight-seeing opportunities that it will be difficult, if not impossible, to cram everything into a fortnight.

Why Go To Cancun

A Cancun holiday caters for your every need. Sun, sand and sea for those who wish to relax on the beach, sports on land and sea for the more energetic holidaymaker and excursions to some fantastic ancient sites for those with an interest in the history and culture of the area.

A Cancun holiday is popular with a wide variety of people. Families with small children enjoy the all-inclusive holiday packages knowing that the accommodation and the facilities will be first class. Cancun has been popular with honeymooners looking for an exotic hideaway and is now attracting brides and grooms who wish for a beach wedding. Those interested in ancient culture will be amazed at the range of well-preserved historic sites within one to two hundred miles of the resort.

When To Go To Cancun

Cancun offers year round enjoyment although the months between October and May provide the most comfortable climate. May to September can be hot with high humidity. The height of the British summer season happens to coincide with the rainy season in Cancun but the consolation is that, unlike Britain, the rain is warm.

Cancun - The Place

Cancun, a young town on the Yucatan Peninsula, has every modern facility that holidaymakers have come to expect. There are large holiday complexes that are self- sufficient providing shopping, nightlife and leisure activities as well as smaller hotels, apartments and villas.

Don’t forget your sunglasses as the brightness of the white sandy beaches in the sunshine is blinding. The wonderful turquoise waters are clear and full of marine life. The Maya Reef is second only to the Australian Great Barrier Reef and contains an amazing diversity of life. It is the perfect place to go scuba diving. Don’t worry if you haven’t attempted it before as there are many schools for beginners. There is also a wide range of water sporting activities from water skiing to surfing and from sailing to fishing. Swimming with dolphins is high on many wish lists and here you can fulfil your dream.

Cancun is golfer’s heaven with a wide choice of venues including the excellent Hilton and Pok ta Pok courses. Cancun is renowned for its lively nightlife, its excellent restaurants and its shopping facilities.

The Yucatan Peninsula is home to some of the most amazing Mayan ruins in Mexico. Although they lie between one and two hundred miles from Cancun it is well worth taking one of the organised excursions to the area.

Cancun Nightlife

The nightlife in Cancun is noted for its vibrancy with many nightclubs and discos pumping out music until the early hours of the morning. The area known as the hotel zone is the place to find the best entertainment with clubs providing special effects with laser and light shows.

There are of course many opportunities for peaceful romantic evenings in the waterfront restaurants.

Cancun Shopping

Cancun offers plenty of shopping opportunities with malls, speciality shops and boutiques. Jewellery and perfumes are particularly cheap here as Cancun is a duty free zone. There are also outdoor markets and a bazaar in Tulum Avenue where bartering may produce a bargain. Mexican arts and crafts are noted for their vibrant colours and there is a wide range of textiles and ceramics. Papier mache articles make excellent gifts as, being light in weight, they use little of your baggage allowance.

Cancun Eating

Cancun eating provides menus to cater for all palates. There are many fine restaurants serving the best of Mexican food as well as international cuisine. Whatever you fancy, from seafood to Italian or from fast food to Cajun, Cancun will provide. As well as savouring the better known traditional food, you may want to try an insect dish. These are a popular ingredient in local diets. Tropical fruit dishes are colourful, tasty and healthy.
