Amoudara Introduction

Amoudara lies on the north coast of Crete, just a few kilometres from the capital Heraklion. It is a modern resort built along one of the islands best sandy beaches which stretches for five kilometres along the azure shoreline. There is good provision of leisure activities both in and out of the water. Amoudara has a large variety of shops, tavernas and restaurants providing for your every need. Being close to the capital, and to Knossos, there are ample opportunities for cultural activities.

Amoudara - The Place

Amoudara is well placed to provide all the necessary ingredients for a pleasant holiday. Being close to the capital and the airport it benefits from a short transfer time. It is also close to the port so access to the many excursions is easy.

One of Amoudara’s main attractions is the beach which is long and sandy. It slopes gently into the inviting waters of the Mediterranean and offers safe bathing. There are many facilities for water sports including diving and snorkelling.

The beach is lined with hotels, bars, restaurants and tavernas providing day-long refreshments and night time entertainment. The wide range of shops provides ample opportunities for finding holiday mementoes and gifts. If you can’t find what you are looking for, the capital Heraklion is only a short bus ride away.

The Minoan archaeological site at Knossos is only a short distance from Amoudara and is well worth a visit. The palace of king Minos has been excavated and these three and a half thousand year old ruins portray the glory that once belonged to the ancient Greeks. There are even frescoes, once adorning the palace walls, which have survived the intervening millennia and are now housed in the museum.

Amoudara Nightlife

Nightlife in Amoudara is fairly lively with bars discos and clubs where you can find entertainment until the early hours of the morning. Dinner is usually eaten late in Crete so the clubs don’t really get going until elevenish.

Amoudara Shopping

Amoudara has a good number of shops and supermarkets selling a wide variety of goods. The usual souvenir and gift shops abound, providing good quality leather goods, ceramics, embroidered linens and jewellery. Being close to the capital, and having a regular bus service, it is easy to enjoy the multitude of retailers including boutiques and jewellers.

Amoudara Eating

Amoudara has a wide variety of fast food outlets, tavernas, cafes and restaurants which cater for most tastes. Their menus are varied, from traditional to international cuisine. If you feel peckish between lunch and dinner try a plate of meze, a Greek equivalent of the Spanish tapas, with such things as deep fried fish, pickles, olives and halloumi.

Eating out in Greece is a pleasure that should be enjoyed in a leisurely fashion. Don’t mistake the lack of haste for tardy service as you are simply being given the time to fully enjoy each course. Children are warmly welcomed in restaurants and their tastes and portion size are usually accommodated.
