Kaprun Introduction

Looking like a winter wonderland, Kaprun is a beautiful village situated in the Hohe Tauern National Park beneath the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier. Although it lies at a comparatively low altitude, at less than eight hundred metres, it nevertheless promises good snow cover throughout the season. Kaprun is located close to Zell am See and together they offer over one hundred and thirty kilometres of skiing in the Europa Sport Region. Lifts give quick and easy access to the slopes and one ski pass gives access to the whole area. The slopes provide great days of skiing for all levels of ability from novice to expert. Tuition is available in skiing for children from four years and in snowboarding from eight years. A range of hotels, apartments and chalets accommodate most budgets. Kaprun’s restaurants serve a variety of cuisine and cater for all tastes. Nightlife is fairly subdued reflecting the resort’s popularity with families. Kaprun’s popular Optimum Sports centre has a swimming pool and fitness centre. A Kaprun ski holiday offers excellent skiing in a stunning landscape with fun and excitement for all the family.

When To Go To Kaprun

The Kaprun ski season lasts from mid December until mid April. Although the resort lies at a fairly low altitude, at a little under one thousand metres, the highest skiing is over two thousand five hundred metres and the proximity of the glacier gives excellent snow cover throughout the season.

Kaprun - The Place

At a fairly low altitude of less than eight hundred metres, Kaprun has surprisingly good snow cover throughout the season. This is because of its location at the foot of the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier. Lying amid stunning scenery, Kaprun, together with its neighbour Zell am See, offers over one hundred and thirty kilometres of piste. There are runs for all levels of skiing and snowboarding abilities. A good number of lifts gives quick and easy access to the slopes. Novices have a choice of two areas with nursery slopes. Over sixty kilometres of pistes are available for intermediate skiers, the majority of which are blue runs. Advanced skiers have a choice of exhilarating black runs in the region, mogul fields and off-piste skiing. Kaprun is considered to be one of the best snowboarding resorts in Austria with its variety of terrain. There is also a snow park with rails, kickers and half pipes. The ski school offers tuition in both skiing and boarding for children from four years and eight years respectively. There are crèche facilities for babies from six months.

Kaprun has a range of accommodation that caters for all budgets, restaurants that provide a diverse cuisine to suit most tastes and shops for holiday essentials as well as gifts and souvenirs. Evening entertainment is often hotel based although there are some fairly lively bars, a couple of which provide music. The Optimum sports centre with swimming pool and fitness centre is very popular with holidaymakers. Other recreational activities include skating, bowling and tobogganing.

Kaprun is noted for its welcoming, child friendly atmosphere, its stunning scenery and its excellent skiing. It is also very popular in the summer with hikers, climbers and mountain bikers enjoying the picturesque landscape.

Kaprun Nightlife

Kaprun nightlife is fairly low key with much of the evening entertainment provided by the larger hotels. There are a total of nine bars some of which provide music and a lively atmosphere but it has to be said that Kaprun is not a resort that parties into the night.

Kaprun shopping is fairly limited with supermarkets supplying essential holiday provisions and sports shops for the purchase or the hire of equipment and clothing.

Kaprun Eating

Kaprun has a little fewer than thirty restaurants which serve a variety of cuisine including traditional fare, Italian and French food. There are also fast food eateries.
